Freddy

Name: Freddy Age: 12 years old (in 2026) Breed: Common European Orange Tabby

Freddy came into my life when he was around four or five months old. Someone in my block evidently knew I had cats, because one night at around 11pm, I heard a little kitten meowing outside my door. When I opened it, Freddy simply wandered in as though he had always lived there. And, as it turned out, he was home.

Freddy is an incredibly friendly boy who wants to be friends with absolutely everyone he meets. He is also quite the vocal cat and will wander around the terrace in the evening, yowling away simply because he can! He is a very gentle boy and, although he comes to me when he wants some love, he isn't as clingy as some of my other cats. He usually sleeps on my bed, often curled up beside me.

Over the last year or so, Freddy has become Baby's little shadow. He absolutely adores cuddling up to him and takes every opportunity he can get. He's also a huge fan of cardboard boxes.

Last year, I noticed Freddy was urinating excessively, which made me suspect that he was beginning to develop kidney problems. Given his age, it wouldn't have been particularly surprising. What did surprise me was discovering that he appears to have been born with one very small kidney and one normal-sized kidney. His healthy kidney has enlarged to compensate for the reduced function, and somehow, for 11 years, his body managed to hide any obvious signs that there was a problem.

Freddy is now on supplements and medication and visits the vet every six months for a thorough check-up, including blood tests and an ultrasound, so we can keep a close eye on his kidney function.

Through it all, Freddy remains the same sweet, gentle, lovable boy he's always been. He's adored by everyone who meets him and, unsurprisingly, is everybody's favourite of all my cats. ❤️
