Morgan

Date of Birth: Unknown
Date of Death: 16 May 2021

Morgan came into my life in October 2020 through the cat rescue association I was working with at the time, Alma Felina Almería. He had originally been trapped alongside a female cat with the intention of being TNR’d (Trap-Neuter-Return), but his blood tests revealed that he was suffering from severe renal distress. He was subsequently diagnosed with Chronic Renal Disease and placed on medication to help manage his condition.

Because of his illness, Morgan could no longer be returned to the street. For a cat in his condition, that would have been a death sentence.

When he arrived, he was in a very poor state. His normally black fur had taken on a coppery colour, and he was underweight, dehydrated and suffering from scabies as well as an upper respiratory infection. He had already spent a considerable amount of time in an isolation cage at a colleague's house, but we wanted something better for him — a chance to live the remainder of his life in safety and comfort.

I was able to integrate Morgan with my other cats without any problems, and with time, food, medication and care, he improved considerably. His coat became shinier and fuller, his condition stabilised, and he blossomed into an incredibly beautiful cat. He was truly stunning.

Morgan was not always the easiest cat to care for. Although he had become tame enough to be handled briefly when necessary, he had spent much of his life as a feral cat and never really learned to appreciate human contact. He preferred to keep his distance and live life on his own terms. He also suffered frequent upper respiratory infections, and keeping his anaemia under control was an ongoing struggle.

In May 2021, Morgan's health deteriorated rapidly. His one remaining "good" kidney finally began to fail, his anaemia became severe, and he developed another upper respiratory infection. Eventually, there was nothing more we could do for him. At the veterinary clinic, we were just making the decision made to let him go peacefully when Morgan passed away suddenly and without pain.

He had only been with me for around seven months, but I will always be grateful that those final months of his life were different from the ones that came before. He was safe, warm, well fed and cared for. He no longer had to struggle on the streets or worry about where his next meal would come from.

Morgan was a quiet and peaceful soul. His passing was deeply upsetting, but alongside the sadness was a sense of relief — relief that, for at least the last part of his life, he knew security and peace.

He deserved so much more time, but I am thankful that he had the time he did.
